Smile lines (New photos added full set)

Are you ready for your nails to be critiqued? This is where you will receive constructive criticism on your nail photos.

Moderator: Velvetelle

Forum rules
The critiquers comment on the nails in the photo. Use below as a guide:
1. Point out what's working, and what's not. Be specific.
2. Point out some things that you think could make the nails better, or ask questions about areas that you are unsure of. Be specific.
3. Don't be afraid to make comments. Everyone knows something about nails. And you all know different things. You might know something that others don't, and your comments might be helpful.
4. While the critiquers comment, the nail artist reads and considers the comments on their own merits.
5. The artist thanks people for their comments. Don't argue them. You can, though, ask questions to clarify what the critiquer is seeing.
6. If a critiquer asks a question about your work or what you're trying to do, answer it the best you can.
7. From here the artist can edit their work accordingly from the constructive feedback they received or they can choose to ignore anything they don't agree with. The final judgment belongs to the nail artist that posted.

Hi everyone,

I have been reading all the previous posts on here about smile lines and have viewed quite a few videos. After a lot of practice i have decided to post some pics and get your much appreciated opinions.

What do you think? I understand that as a beginner practice is my best friend but what are some specifics I need to concentrate on? Are thay at an ok quality that I can start doing paying clients?

what i found is when i started i drew the smile lines on the tip and then tried to follow it with acrylic. they arent too bad for a beginner, you just need to make them sharper, they look a little fuzzy along the line. I would also try and bring the side walls in, they fan out a little, but those practice fingers are weird and i dont like them...maybe try and get a hold of a practice hand, which is more life like so to say and would bend like real fingers do.

how long have you been doing nails for?

Thanks for that feedback. The fuzzy line is what i was concerned about. How do i make it sharper? You're right about the practice fingers, i think thats the only reason why my side walls fan out. I have been doing nails since October 09, thats when i started my Cert 11.

Hi Liz :D I looked at all 3 pics and zoomed in and have to say that I didnt think it was fuzzy as much as perhaps just not a great pic? They look really clean to me, could be a bit sharper, but you will proberly find that when you become faster, they will also become sharper as the product wont dry as quickly.

Only further suggestion I have is in regards to pic 3, where the smile line ends, its incomplete, see its rounded it needs to go that little further to end to a point to create the full smile, like this :D , lol (joke)

And yes I think you are ready to charge for your services :D

Well done Liz!

Thanks Tess.
I see what you mean about the part where the smile ends. Do you use a special brush to make it sharper ? I have just been using my normal acrylic brush a size 10.

:D Yay, so happy my works ok for clients.

I work with a pointed size 8. I find if I have my white a little wetter I can train it to follow the tip of my brush up the sides, the when I pat down it goes out so then I also push the sides and it makes the white butt up against the pink ( I do reverse application )

Hope that helps :)

Good job though, keep going!

i also use a number 8 cats tongue one, i find with the point on brush its easier to get into the sides to make them smilie.

not bad if you have only been doing since oct, get some more practice on friends and family, maybe just charge them for the products you use for now, that way you get some experience and you can try and get quicker, i remember when i started took me 3 hours to do a set..

No I just use a number 8 (I use an 8 for everything) but I dont have it pointy at all, I have it oval flat and working backwards, I hold the brush nearly flat on the nail (so the tip of the brush is facing directly towards me, not the client) and "fan" it around to make the smile, then bring it in at the sides, then fan, then bring in the sides, back and forth till its sharp :D Do you have a size 8? You may find your work is cleaner with an 8 then a 10. :D

Hi all,

Here's a full set i did today!! I used my size 8 cats tongue brush for the white acrylic and found it much better. I was expecting a disaster but i am really happy with how they turned out. I think they are my best set yet. :D

What do you think?

Hi Liz,

They look great, well done.

Did you sculpt them??

Did you use avolve??

Did you end up trying the reverse method??

You have really done a great job, you should be very happy with them. :D :D
