Want help or a pat on the back

Postby Mel Skora » Thu Jan 28, 2010 8:49 pm

Ok this is going to cause a few eyebrows to raise...
But i have been a member on here for some time...... I am a daily visitor to the site..... and i am sad to see what is happening here...

We are all here to learn about nails.... but it seems to me.... maybe not to you... but to me that there are more people on here looking for a pat on the back than actual learning.

I have seen some really good work... and I have seen some down right rubbish.... and the comments on both didt differ all that much...

It seems if u make a "neg" comment , which is only trying to offer guidance.. u get a"bitch" lable slapped on u.

I would be highly offended if someone told me they like my work if they though this is what i wanted to hear......
No one is perfct but there are alot of great techs on here with years of knowledge.... and becuase of fear of being shot down they now offer no support.I know of at least 3 that have left the site due to this....

I think we all need to get back to the basics and what this forum is all about...
learnign and helping each other...
to many personal issues are being taken over in threads and there has been alot of hijacking of threads....
if u have an issue raise your own post.... if u have something of value to add neg or pos post it .....
we are just people with the same passion... we dont need to pee in each others pocket.... half of us will never meet... they other half should respect what u have to say and work on the points thy raised...

I cant tell u how many times my "side walls" have been "picked on".... good keep picking on them... I need to get them right....

well that is just my say and i am sure there will be others that dont agree.
I am sorry if i have offened anyone but it has been eating away at me for a few months now

Well actually I agree with what you say, problem is that if I offer any type of advice because they obviously need it, I end up with 2 or 3 people jumping me, mind you these people could do with a hell of a lot of help in regards to nails, but seem to think they are perfect  The only people here that take my advice seriously are those that know me now, or those that pm me personally for it.. The rest question it time and time again, so they no longer get it.. Look at the "Sciver" debarcle a couple of months back, my every word was challenged post after post... and she's a chef!! I dont question how one cooks pies, why challenge me, pfft!

Well I have the "Bitch" label and I wear it proudly!! As I always say "If you dont want the truth, dont ask me!"

Well said Mel, I agree wholeheartedly, I know i am here to learn and gain knowledge, i am also here to listen to peoples opinon of my work so i can improve... if no one tells you the truth how on earth can you learn.

Outside of nails i have missed out on at least 4 jobs that i was acting in because the manager never gave mee any feedback... if i had the feedback i could have learnt and grown from it!! But no they didn't want to offend me, but in the long run, that was more detramental to me... to me thats crap, be open and honest.

No one is perfect and none of us should pretend that we are. :) :D :) :D :)
Cheers

Well all I can say is from my own personal thoughts so this is just me: but if I post photos or in the future when I post photos, my nails are far far far from perfect so I would be asking for as much feedback and honest truth as I can get, otherwise I’m not going to learn. yes I’ve done my cert2 but I feel this is only the beginning for me and want to absorb as much info (I.e. what you all think) and training as I can. I do not offer tips for anyone on how they can personally improve their nails as I do not feel as tho skills wise I am in a position to do so, but there are many of you out there who have the experience/training/skills out there that feedback/improvements etc I would be welcoming and would hope others in similar situations would do so and not take it personally…
just my 2 cents for what its worth?

ps i'm going to be posting my first stillettos (gel) next wk so ya better help me lol :)

Tess wrote:Oh and will add to my post as well, that a lot of people got their noses out of joint because I used to challenge Carl on what he said when I believed he was incorrect... LOL... I challenged while most sat back and kissed his butt cheeks "Oh Carl, master of nails", lol what a joke.. Want a laugh, go to salon geek where they bow to his holiness.. And then have the gall to bitch about bitchiness on this site!

Not I Tess, true to my word, I call a spade a spade and I had a go at Carl in that exact thread.
BUT.. like a "proper" adult, in a separate thread he offered advice to me on my brush and I took it. Needless to say I thank him for it.

I can also only speak for myself in regards to Mel's topic:

I am living proof that if u take truthful constructive critisim and use it to ur advantage u can sure as hell improve!
I have come a long way, I am no where near perfect and I think those few handfuls who told me the truth about my work and I highly value their honesty!
If it wasn't for them, I would not be able to offer help to others in return.

People really need to stop taking things to heart.
When u did ur cert, did u stomp off outta the course because ur teachers gave u negative comments??

I don't write on here a lot, and have not been a member of this forum for a very long time, but I thought I'd add my two cents.

The first day I joined this forum, I added some pictures of my nails. I got a ton of compliments, but also, one brave soul gave me some criticism. They told me that my nails fanned out and that I should file them a little narrower. Until I read this comment, I did not realize this, but after, I went back through all of my pictures, and realized that all of my nails fanned out this way. Since then, I've improved so much just because of that comment, my nails look so clean and narrow, and I would have never realized my error if it was not for this forum.

I think that criticism is a great way to learn, and I will be very sad if anyone sees a problem with my nails and does not tell me, because my reason in joining this forum was to learn. I haven't uploaded any more pictures since then, because I got a new computer, and (silly me) lost all my passwords I saved and for the life of me can't remember my photobucket password. I'll eventually get a new account and I hope that in the future people with much more experience can help me make my work as close to perfection as possible.

That being said, I think there is a difference between constructive criticism and just being downright mean. Very rarely do I see these mean posts here, but if I did see something mean, I would definitely give the person giving the mean comments the "bitch" title in my head. The nice people, who you can tell are trying to help would never get that title from me, and I'd like to think that others think this way too, but its obvious that they don't, because this post would not have started if people could give criticism without having someone down their throats.

One more point, I think that Carl's main intention is to be helpful, and I think that many things get lost in translation, so to speak, on this forum (Ie. Voice tone, sarcasm...), and it is very easy to take someone the wrong way. After reading many of his posts, I have learned the way he writes and I think I have learned his tone. If he wrote one of his criticisms on a post of mine when I first joined this forum, I would have probably been offended or upset, but now, after learning his tone to some extent, I think I would understand him, and read past any sarcasm and get to the great advice that he always seems to offer.

Bravo!! Well said Mel, I totally agree with you! This is the reason I have stopped giving advice because I feel I can't give the right advice to some. I love hearing the good and bad, if I don't know where I went wrong I will never learn. Even now after a few years of doing nails I still get things wrong and like to be corrected but sadly I don't post them here because all I will get is "wow", "fantastic" etc., etc.,

If I did a crappy set I would have loved to hear....."Shit Desi, what happened there? Were you on drugs when you did that set"?

Sadly no-one will say that! I guess in a way some don't want to hurt another one's feelings but this is what this site is all about, to learn, meet and enjoy!!!

..I am glad that u all have agreed with what is being said here.

Asd far as "carl" aka Nail Zoo goes..... yes he can be a pain in the arse.. arent we all..... BUT... i learnt more from Him adn Gigi in 2 days then i did in 4 years...
It is sooo sad that he is now helping techs over seas on salon geek and not the gals on here... but many many times he got his high horse and pissed off to many people.. now he doesnt bother at all.
I am not saying he was correct. ( and tess for the record I sided with your factual comments)... but he did know his stuff.
I have been in his apparment and the amount of reasearch and information he has filed about every liquid, power and :"stuff" ever made.. it was amazing.
Anyway it is no secret I think the sun shines out his arse   BUT i do agree that hewent to far on alot of occassions.
Ok that said

Desi... start posting chick...., I will give it to u bot barrels. LOL

I am guilty of posting pics on geek..... because i know they will give it to me both guns firing.... all i get here is "wow" Love me.. etc. like desi.
I know they are crap in areas... i want u guys, Olga and the nfu oh gals to pick them apart... then i will try adn try again

thanks to all that have been honest and we can all move forward

I agree to an extent....but there a nice way to say things and a not so nice way to say things
If you come on here and give nothing but criticism, of course people are going to give you the label "queen ding a ling who can't do no wrong" but if you approach your posts with a little humour (such as Desi just pointed out) then it is YOU who is in the wrong by taking it to heart.

DESI you are always on drugs *lol*

There are times when we need criticism...and there are times when we need a pat on the back....take the good with the bad...and get on with it

I think everyone needs to have a cup of cement for breakfast
Keep smiling.....makes people wonder what you're thinking!! ;)
